You know last week when I said I was going to avoid doing my posts on Sunday night? Well it's 23:32, so I guess that kind of failed.
There's a commonly quoted line from Fight Club which goes "You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake." It's part of the general depressing feel of the film and I disagree with the sentiment. You are special, you are beautiful and you are unique. And you know what else is? A snowflake. A snowflake which has probably made about as much of its existence as you have. The thing is, being unique doesn't really make you worth anything. All snowflakes are unique, but they are basically the same and only serve a purpose as a group. The majority of people are the same, they're unique but they're pretty much content with being mediocre. But perhaps my use of the word mediocre is uncalled for, as maybe it's not about how good you are at all, rather the mere fact that you are different. To explain uniqueness I usually use my circles and squares analogy (stop me if I've told it to you already. Or, you know, skip the part where I explain it). Basically, the world is full of quadrangles that are all very nearly squares, but not quite. They are all different from each other, but they all have very similar characteristics. So it can definitely be said that any one is unique, but not necessarily special. Then along comes a circle. The circle is completely different from all the squares, making it unique and special. Of course if the circle was with over circle like shapes it would cease to be special.
What I'm trying to say, and I apologise for the quality of the post, is that when everyone else is a beautiful snowflake, perhaps it's best to be an ugly raindrop.
