Correction

I correct people a lot. I don't (usually) do it to annoy people, I just feel misinformation is bad. People base decisions on information and if that information is wrong, those decisions might be wrong too. Not only that, but that misinformation will spread like a plague, infecting people with its wrongness. Urban myths spring up and, if left unabated, can become government policy.
However, I recognise that it can be very annoying to be corrected about your fun fact about the number of words Eskimos have for snow when you were just trying to make small talk. Occasionally even I get corrected (of course, this only happens once every year, as I am required by law to let someone feel they've outsmarted me that frequently) and it's slightly annoying (well, it would be if I hadn't purposefully made the mistake), but at least now I know that the next time I give that fun fact I'll get it right.
On a related note, I hate QI. Now, don't get me wrong, I like Stephen Fry and I enjoy the show, but its existence is an issue for me. I will tell someone a brilliant fact and they will acquire an all knowing air, look at me and say "Yeah, I watch QI too." Now, I don't actually watch much QI and almost invariably I am forced to respond with "Actually, I learnt that from something that wasn't the T.V." They will then not talk to me again. Really I shouldn't have an issue with QI as it has the same goals that I stand for, the end of misinformation. But, honestly, I still get a kick out of being right. (A fun way to watch QI is to award yourself a point every time you correct Stephen. I tend to get maybe one or two points in a game, but feel incredibly smug. This is why people don't like me, isn't it?)
Anyway, please, read and remember this. If nothing else, it will at least make future conversations with me slightly easier.
